Activist Tutorial: Introducing the CFAR to a Populist-Progressive Candidate

Do you know a populist-progressive candidate who wants to run for Congress in 2018?

This could be an independent, a third-party, or a "renegade" major-party candidate who wants to primary a centrist-establishment, neoliberal member of his or her own party.
Whatever the case, this individual will be at an enormous disadvantage in every aspect of engineering a successful campaign.  There's the lack of money, media coverage, and basic support from the corporate-owned major political parties.

This is where my candidate contract strategy comes to the rescue.  Now that the strategy has evolved to the point of generating a comprehensive contract which embraces a set of major populist-progressive initiatives backed, according to reputable, highly-reliable polls, by 62% - 90% of the voting public, I've offered it as a "template" for populist-progressive candidates to build their individual campaigns around.  I call it the Contract for American Renewal -- or CFAR.

The CFAR and the strategy which it anchors has been adopted by two sister organizations:  Citizens Against Plutocracy and Revolt Against Plutocracy.

I prepared the above tutorial video for Revolt Against Plutocracy to prepare and instruct activists in their approach to populist-progressive candidates who could use a successful framework for their political campaigns.

Since the whole candidate contract strategy is completely unprecedented, it requires some explanation; being able to anticipate the fear of the unknown, flawed preconceptions and prejudices; and counter some of the recurring objections which I've experienced over the years developing and promoting it.  I think the video does a pretty decent job exploring the potential of the approach, and deflecting most erroneous but predictable concerns which arise when something this radical and outside-the-box comes along.

If you know a populist-progressive candidate who you want to see in office but suspect is struggling with how to combat a rigged game and overcome every other obstacle that our current skewed system uses to marginalize good, decent potential public servants, please show them this video, or study it yourself, then present the CFAR concept to that person, as instructed in the tutorial.

The entire text for the video presentation at the head of this article now follows:

[ When a completely new idea comes around, predictably there is misunderstanding and apprehension.  The more unique and original the idea, the greater is the reluctance to see it for what it is and recognize its potential.  Call it the shock of the new.

A populist candidate will typically be inexperienced, tentative, suspicious, and especially frightened by the “idea of a contract”.  This is to be expected.  This requires right from the outset being positive, reassuring, confident but sensitive, sincere and open.  The strategy must be offered — not demanded — and framed in the most flattering manner exactly for what it is:  It is a unique but powerful, unprecedented but decisive, rock-solid methodology for replacing our current corrupt pay-for-play congressmen, with good decent individuals who will represent their constituents with integrity, honesty, transparency, and accountability.

Here step-by-step is how the contract should be presented to a prospective populist-progressive candidate.  Take your time to understand and embrace the message.  Then put it into your own words.  This is not a script.  It’s what should be communicated, but it should come from YOU, reflecting you as a person and your thorough understanding of and genuine commitment to the CFAR strategy.

The subject you are addressing is numbered and appears here in italics, and our suggested language as to what to say follows. ]

1 — Why are we doing this?

As you know, we’re up against a brutal, well-organized, well-funded, ruthless enemy.  The establishment — the plutocracy which now owns and controls both major parties — has all of the money, they have the media in their pockets, they marginalize dissenting opinion, they have all but crushed the minor parties, and any “renegade” candidate not towing the establishment line is ignored, often even vilified and demonized.

There’s really only one way to fight this.  We must unify across the entire populist-progressive front, in every single district and state, and nationally assemble an enormous bloc of voters to challenge the manipulative and deceptive messaging, the cynical use of money, power and political machinery which both major parties wield to isolate and destroy populist-progressive campaigns — campaigns by good decent people just like you.

2 — How can we challenge such monolithic power?

The good news is that we have huge majorities of citizens agreeing with you as a populist-progressive, on a whole host of issues.  Granted, you wouldn’t know that from watching the news.  But it’s true.  It’s an indisputable fact, we already have the voting public on our side, on key issues.  We’re talking percentages of 62% - 80% agreement.  What the establishment candidates do to keep getting elected is confuse the public with a lot of babble and empty promises.  In a nutshell, we’ve come up with a bulletproof way to “unconfuse” everyday Americans.  We’ve come up with a device which used properly will make YOU, the populist-progressive candidate look like a hero — a savior!  And it will expose your establishment opponents as the frauds, hypocrites and phonies they really are.  The voting public will run the other way.

3 — What is the CFAR?

The device I’m talking about is the CFAR.  That stands for Contract For American Renewal.  Yes, it’s a contract.  But before you panic, let’s be clear exactly what this contract is designed to do.  First, it’s not there to restrict, regulate, or police you.  It’s designed to discredit and defeat your opponents.  It’s an electoral strategy, not a legal strategy.  You have to understand and remain clear about this.  While you will be signing the contract, your opponents won’t — they literally can’t — sign it.  In the eyes of the voters, because you’re willing to give a firm commitment in writing, guaranteeing that you will serve them faithfully, honestly, transparently, and your opponents can only hem-and-haw and spew out more slogans and sound bites, YOU will not just get the attention of voters, they’ll know with absolute certainty that you are serious, that you are willing to lay it all on the line, and PROVE TO THEM beyond a shadow of doubt that you are worthy of their trust, and thus deserve their votes.

4 — What does the CFAR require?

Let’s get into the details.  The CFAR requires what you will be doing anyway if you’re running as a populist-progressive candidate.  What appears on the contract is what you already stand for, why we assume you’re running for office as an “outsider”.  It includes the kinds of things that any populist-progressive worthy of calling themselves that, wants to fight for on behalf of the majority of citizens.  Look at these poll numbers …

[ Show the candidate a printed sheet of the following poll results. By the way, this is available as a PDF file called CFAR_Initiative Polls, as well as the CFAR contract template, and the entire text of this tutorial, on the CFAR tutorial web page. All are available for you to view and download.  We’ll provide a link to that page at the end of this video.  Now here are the poll results you’ll be showing the candidate. ]

63% of Americans want a federal minimum wage of $15.00 per hour.
75% of voters want fair trade agreements protecting jobs, workers, the environment.
76% of voters want a cut back on military spending.
76% of voters want the U.S. completely out of Afghanistan.
79% of voters want no reductions in Social Security, 70% support expanding it.
79% of voters want no reductions in Medicare.
80% of voters oppose the "Citizens United" U.S. Supreme Court decision.
68% of voters think taxes on the wealthy should be increased, and corporations should be required to pay their fair share.
71% of voters support massive infrastructure renewal.
65% of voters want laws to combat climate change.
62% of voters want tuition free public colleges and universities.

Are you with the voters on these issues?  These are the major crises of our times.  This is what people care about, not Trump’s tweets or whether Melania uses henna to streak her hair.

[ Now have the candidate indicate which of these items are the focus of his or her campaign, what seems most important.  Next show the CFAR contract template.  As just mentioned, it is available as a download at the CFAR website page. ]

Look at this!  You can see what we’ve done here.  The contract perfectly parallels the polls.  Therefore, the contract represents what the vast majority of everyday citizens in this country want done.  The exact things which never get done with our current Congress of ruling class puppets.

5 — Is the contract written in stone or is it flexible?

So we have a great start here.  Very popular initiatives across the entire nation.  At the same time, we realize there are variations in each voting jurisdiction.  So the contract is not written in stone.  It’s flexible, designed to meet your needs.  You may decide to use the CFAR as written.  Or you may want to tweak it, drop some items that are not crucial to your future constituents, AND maybe feature a different populist-progressive initiative that’s not listed here.

Let me give you an example.  Let’s say there are a lot of underwater home mortgages in this district.  This not only affects those home owners but it’s driving the property values down across the region.  You might consider including in your CFAR a mortgage relief initiative.

Here’s another example.  A very recent poll just indicated that nationally the support for single-payer health care is around 58%.  As the controversy builds, this will probably keep going up.  But let’s say we find that this district has already had a lot of problems with insurance companies, or people are finding a poor range of choices for health coverage — and they’re really upset about it!  Then that’s an item which based on your own sensitivities to your constituent’s needs, you might want to put in your CFAR for the voters here.

Understand that in the end, the only items that you have in your CFAR are those which make sense for your campaign and which you can wholeheartedly commit to when you go to Washington DC.
Having said that, signing your personalized version of the CFAR should be a no-brainer.  The initiatives in your CFAR are the items you’ve decided are the centerpieces in your campaign, and have determined will be decisive in defeating your opponent.

6 — How does a candidate fulfill the obligations of the contract?

Okay, you’re signing this as a “legally-binding” contract.  That’s what the contract says.  That means you are signing it with every intention of honoring it to the letter.  This might sound ominous to you.  I respect your concerns.  But fulfilling your obligations under the contract couldn’t possibly be simpler.  The contract says you will introduce, sponsor or co-sponsor, and support legislation for those items in the contract.  That’s it.  Go to Congress, draft legislation and make every effort get it on the legislative agenda within 180 days of taking office.  Then if it comes up EXCLUSIVELY for a vote, you vote for it.  What does ‘exclusively’ mean?  It means if they attach an amendment to kill all the penguins in Antarctica or to require everyone to wear polka dot pants on Thursday, you don’t vote for it.  If it comes up as a standalone bill, you vote for it.  You also publicly and on the floor of Congress promote it.  That’s it.  If you can’t handle that, you probably shouldn’t be running for office.  It’s the basic job description for a legislator.

7 — How does the candidate decide what to put in the “personalized” CFAR?

So how do you decide what to include in your CFAR?  This is a critical decision and we’re here to help you.  To cover general questions, we’ll have an entire tutorial devoted to this and I’ll share that video with you.  To handle your specific questions, we’re here to walk you through, each step of the way.

But the short answer is you choose those initiatives which are decisive in making you look good and your opponents look bad.  Meaning, you want issues which are popular right here in this district with the voters, which ARE NOT supported by your opponents.  The idea is to make sure they WILL NOT be able to sign this contract.  That way the voters will see if they elect you, these great things will get done, but if they vote for your opponent, they can expect more of the same excuses, chuck and jive mumbo jumbo, and none of the things you’ve included in your CFAR will get through Congress.

Remember, there’s a reason your opponents can’t sign the CFAR.  That’s because if they sign a contract guaranteeing all of these wonderful things for the voters, they’ll lose their campaign donations from fat-cat donors, AND they’ll lose the support of whichever major party they belong to.  We only have to look at the Bernie Sanders campaign to see what the establishment Democrats thought about his progressive agenda.  Both parties support basically a conservative centrist regressive agenda.  They might talk a good story but, as you well know, neither major party walks the walk.

8 — How much time does the candidate have to decide?

Listen, we understand this is an important decision for you to make.  It’s important to us as well, because the sooner we get candidates like yourself on board, the sooner we can organize both our local and national campaigns around the CFAR, and get started putting together a solid populist-progressive Congress.

So how much time do you need?  Four days?  A week? You tell me.

[ Do not give them more than a week. ]

Please understand, I know as you’re thinking about all of this, you’ll have questions.  Just give me or anyone with my organization a call.  We’re more than happy to address any concerns, walk you through this step-by-step so you are completely satisfied.  This is a bulletproof plan for winning elections and getting good people like yourself into Congress.  The strategy has been thoroughly thought through and I’d be surprised if there were any real obstacles to you yourself playing a critical role in our attempt to save our democracy.  But we recognize.  This is coming out of nowhere, it’s completely unique, nothing like this has ever been tried, so you’re going to want to have everything on the table, out in the open, so you’re comfortable with it.  So study it, ask questions, let’s work together.

Let me make an important point:  Yes, it’s coming out of nowhere, it’s completely unique, nothing like this has ever been tried.  And THAT’S precisely why it’s going to work!  It’s going to catch the establishment completely flat-footed.  It’s doing something they forgot about and haven’t tried for decades:  Being up front and straightforward with the public and guaranteeing voters honest and genuine service.  The major parties will be scratching their heads saying:  “Now why didn’t we think of that?”

9 — What if after the agreed upon time for deciding, the candidate says he or she won’t sign the contract?  What’s the final pitch?

Recognize that the only way this strategy will work is if we implement it across the nation in all 50 states and all 435 congressional districts.  Which is exactly what we’re going to do.  We will have a candidate in all 33 senate races for November 2018, and candidates in all 435 congressional districts, every one of whom have signed a CFAR.  We have an entire network of organizations which are now being organized and networked to work tirelessly for those candidates.  We’re dead serious about this and have one simple goal:  Make sure every single populist-progressive candidate running in November 2018 wins their election.  We’re talking about a complete takeover of Congress.  Anything less than that and you can kiss American democracy good-bye forever. The rich will keep getting richer, the everyday citizen will become serfs, the wars will keep going until our once-great nation is bankrupt and has collapsed.

I have to be entirely candid with you.  As much as I admire you, as much as I see that you want to do the right thing, as much as I’d like to believe you have a snowball’s chance in hell of winning your bid, we can’t take any chances.  Republicans now control the Senate, the House, the Oval Office, the majority of state legislatures, and the majority of governors are now Republican.  To rub salt in our wounds, most of the Democrats are nearly as bad — certainly on the issues in the CFAR — as the Republicans.  You’re one person and you’re going to take on the most well-organized, well-funded army of cutthroat corporate stooges in our history.  I wish you luck.  The way we see it is we have to all stick together or none of us will survive.  We believe — no, we know! — that by UNIFYING OUR FORCES — the populist-progressive forces which have been shoved aside and beaten down now for decades — we can win this.  The CFAR puts us all on the same page, UNIFIES US AND THE VOTING PUBLIC into an unstoppable juggernaut.  The CFAR demonstrates to the public that there are good, decent candidates available who are unquestionably, unambiguously committed to honest, transparent, loyal service.  We’ll crush the establishment candidates at the polls and Americans will get a government that works for all Americans, not just the rich and powerful.

Let me be blunt . . . if you don’t sign the contract, you’ll probably lose.  Therefore, we’re forced to look for another candidate who will sign the contract, a candidate who has an infinitely better chance of winning.  We’ll put all of our time, energy and resources behind that candidate.  It’s nothing personal.  It’s the only way this thing will work.  The contract is your friend, not your enemy.  If fact, it’s the best friend and ally you could possibly have given the way the game is stacked against you.  This may be hard for you to accept.  But it’s the truth.

I know this is a lot to think about.  I want you to succeed.  So take two more days.  If I don’t hear back from you within 48 hours, I’ll assume you’re not interested and we’ll move on. Regardless of your decision, thanks for your hard work on behalf of progressive causes.

A Look At The Numbers

Numbers

This references my previous article, The "I'll vote for Jill if you will" Pledge Campaign, which to my pleasant surprise has resulted in quite a bit of positive support.

Several commenters asked me how I came up with the numbers, and how realistic was it to think that we could get 50,000,000 folks to sign the pledge to vote for Jill Stein, the target for "activating" the promise to vote for her.  Meaning, if 50,000,000 voters took the pledge, they could all vote for her, secure in the knowledge that they would not be throwing their vote away -- a vote of conscience resulting in a victory by whichever major-party candidate they happened to despise.

I said that 50,000,000 would "guarantee" a plurality win?  How did I arrive at that figure?

Well, there are no "guarantees" in a system using unverifiable electronic voting machines, so we can just give this our best estimate:  There are 146,311,000 registered voters in the U.S.  In the 2012 election, 126,144,000 voted.  If we assume a very formidable turnout of 130,000,000 for 2016, 50,000,000 represents a 38% plurality. This would allow as much as a 12% spread between Trump and Clinton, e.g. 25% Trump and 37% Clinton.  Actually, some predict that it might go the other way, meaning as much as 37% for Trump and 25% for Clinton, on the expectation that Stein would be pulling the "progressive" vote away from Clinton.

I also said that 50,000,000 was realistic -- it was an achievable target -- and showed how the power of an exponential multiplier provides us plenty of time to get this organized and done.  At the same time, we should recognize that the arithmetic alone begs the question of whether there are people out there who are even receptive to a third-party option, who are sufficiently disgusted with the way this election is shaping up to jump off the major-party bandwagons.

Again, we can only speculate.  But a few factors are encouraging.

As cited in a Salon article, Gallup polls for the fifth year in a row indicate that over 40% of voters identify themselves as "independents", so disenchanted are they with the two-party system which has defined electoral politics for much of recent history.

More specifically, deep dissatisfaction with the major-party choice of Trump vs. Clinton is evidenced by historic levels of unfavorability ratings.  Clinton is at 55% and rising, Trump is at 70% and could go either way.  But just taking them at these current levels means that there is a minimum 25% of voters who strongly disapprove of both.  This 25% translates to more than 36,000,000 registered voters -- a huge number of voters who apparently prefer to vote for neither.  If they can be directed Jill Stein's way, this is a big head start toward our goal of 50,000,000!

Lastly, Jill Stein has taken a bold and powerful stand on an issue which garnered much favor and enthusiasm in the Bernie revolution, that of free college education.  Currently, some 42,000,000 college graduates are saddled with onerous debts, just trying to obtain skills and credentials which will give them a fighting chance for a decent job in our highly competitive and compromised job market.  Jill Stein has committed to a full forgiveness of student loan debt if she becomes president.  Talk about reaching out to young people and appealing to them to vote in their own interests!

I don't have to tell you that I think the "I'll vote for Jill if you will" pledge idea could be a real game-changer.  It risks nothing, demands little of voters other than a few minutes of their time and a commitment to attentive, fearless voting, should the campaign succeed, yet offers the possibility of a paradigm shift in electoral politics.  Finally, the stranglehold of the two major parties will be broken, and a new broad range of potential solutions will be brought center-stage to the national conversation.
But good ideas are not automatic.  Good ideas only get traction if people take the time to understand them, then actively share their understanding with others.  The language of the pledge makes this necessity clear:

"I will now contact two other people who I respect and trust, let them know there is a real alternative to the Clinton vs. Trump political spectacle, explain that if we frustrated voters join together, we will not be throwing our votes away, we can elect a great president, America’s first female president no less."

The corporate-controlled main stream media did everything it could to marginalize and destroy the Bernie Sanders campaign.  It has also been completely successful at keeping Jill Sanders an invisibility on the political stage.

Therefore, it's up to us:  Each person tells two others, who each tell two others, who . . .

It's the power of numbers.

It's the power of people over plutocracy, the voice of individual citizens shouting down the mind-numbing mantras of the 1%, mouthed by their brain-dead talking heads and political puppets.
There are 61,450,000 "independents" out there somewhere.  There are 36,578,000 voters who think neither Clinton nor Trump should be president.  There are 42,000,000 students struggling to pay for their college education.

We have work to do!

Throwing My Vote Away?

I'm With Jill Stein

The presidential election of 2016 -- if you only consider the presumptive nominees of the two major political parties -- is like choosing between being brutally beaten to death by a street gang and mercilessly Tasered to death by the police.

It's a masochists game.  But I've never viewed voting as a game, no matter how minor the stakes or ridiculous the choices.

Maybe in the past, having a lower tolerance for deception and corruption, I've mirrored Ralph Nader's decades-long warnings about and battle against the corporatization of our society and the tyranny of an oligarchic elite which would inevitably result.

Perhaps until now, this appeared to be driven by a heady, theoretical, ivory-tower world view, an approach distanced from day-to-day realities.

Perhaps such abstractions seemed frivolous or self-indulgent, even dangerous.  Need we revisit the spurious judgment that voting for Nader threw the election and set the stage for eight years of George W. Bush?

Perhaps all of my histrionics about the disappearance of democracy, the corruption of our Congress, the takeover of our government apparatus by self-appointed autocrats, the need for replacing at bare minimum 450 senators and congressmen, my railing at the duplicity of Obama, my warnings about the subversion of his allegedly "progressive" leadership, yes all of this may have been dismissed as hyperventilation and raving lunacy.

But with the treachery and abysmal hypocrisy of Bernie Sanders' endorsement of Hillary Clinton for president this past week, it couldn't be clearer where things stand.

Nor could it be more evident how broken our two-party political system is or what a trap lesser-evil voting has been all along.

Don't anyone dare tell me that by not voting for presumptive nominee Hillary Clinton or presumptive nominee Donald Trump, I am throwing my vote away!

Voting for either of these privileged-class monsters is the definition of throwing away my vote, of surrendering my right of choice, of rendering voting a meaningless exercise.

Putting Boots (Birkenstocks) on the Ground: Part II

Revolution Rally

It looks like the American public, or some significant portion of it, is waking up.  There is now a new populist uprising in the making.  Long beaten into submission, the cowering lumps of disengaged despairing doormats have finally seen the writing on the wall, are breathing a new life, and getting ready to strike back at their oppressors -- the 1% and the .1% and the .01% -- who just about have it all, but want even the few remaining scraps.

The statistics have been clear for some time.  Everyday Americans -- the 99% -- have been getting royally screwed. Government of the people, by the people, for the people has been turned into a hollow slogan, a fading recollection of a noble, now irrelevant, improbable, and ostensibly inoperable idea.

In spite of the best efforts by the media -- always in service of the rich elite -- to hide the rotten news mounting during this democratic devolution, people have grown increasingly aware of the problems and outcomes.  They didn't need to look at charts and statistics.  They felt the pain personally.  Individual wealth for everyday Americans is shrinking. Wages and purchasing power are in decline.  People are in debt up to their eyebrows.  Schools, roads, whole communities are falling apart.  The water isn't even fit to drink.

The Sanders/Trump populist uprising is the inevitable result.  Eventually, the pain becomes unbearable and people understandably look for some way or some one to fix things.  Sanders has some great ideas, Trump has a big mouth.  They each in their own unique and characteristic ways represent a "savior" to the masses.

But neither of these men, or any presidential candidate for that matter, can get the job done.  That is written in stone.  Read the Constitution.

How does it get done?

We get it done.  Sure, you can follow the campaign, go to your favorite candidate's rallies,  watch the battle for the presidency unfold on the boob tube.  After all, it's the best reality show in town.  Better than Mud Wrestling With The Stars!

Then, when you want to actually do something for yourself, your family and friends, your community, your country, please tear yourself away from this insulting media circus and begin to actually change the world for the better.

Forget about the labels.  Forget Democrat, Republican, liberal, conservative, right wing, left wing, socialist, Green Party, Tea Party.

Americans actually agree on a lot of important things.  Arguably most!

With all of the shouting, the cage fighting of the Republican debates, the far more civil and intelligent but still largely irrelevant Democratic debates, muddled by the sports-team-like coverage of all matters political by our entertainment-oriented media, you wouldn't know this.  But most Americans actually share a host of values and priorities, and even more surprisingly, specifically agree on much of what needs to be done and not done.

Here is a short list of things U.S. citizens by sizable majorities agree on:

75% of Americans want a federal minimum wage of $12.50 per hour.
68% of voters think taxes on the wealthy should be increased.
71% of voters support massive infrastructure renewal.
74% of American voters are for ending oil industry subsidies.
93% of voters want GMO labeling on their food.

These are huge majorities!

These astonishing and powerful consensuses get lost in the trivialization, marginalization, and other weapons of mass distraction and sheer propaganda we all endure just trying to find out and understand what's going on.  We are teased, taunted, cajoled, manipulated, titillated, dazzled, disturbed, and generally overwhelmed by the main stream media.

But we are not informed.

If anything we are confused, sometimes outright misinformed.

Thus we lose focus.  We can't keep our eye on the prize, because from watching television we have no idea what the prize even is.

Worst of all -- and it almost appears to be intentional -- we are divided.

We are set against one another, encouraged to vilify and blame others, the very people we actually agree with on a lot of things, the very people who are our natural allies as we fight for our survival in the class warfare the rich and powerful wage on us.

Turn off your TVs.  Hide your smart phones under the mattress.  Let the screensaver on your computer do whatever it does -- swimming fish, go-go dancers, shooting stars -- and don't disturb it to watch the latest Trump riots or primary predictions.  It's mood lighting.  Recycle your USA Today, your daily newspaper, your weekly and monthly magazines.

Then . . .

Go talk to someone.  Anyone!

Your neighbor, your cousin, your kid's teacher, that lady down the street who is always working in her garden, the guy who polishes his car three times a week, your ex-spouse, anyone in your community who you can approach without getting shot.

Maybe you could bake some cupcakes or buy some wonderful muffins from the bakery in town.  Or make a trip to Costco, if all the bakeries in your area are now out of business.

Start out with something like this:

"Would you like a cupcake?"

In Part III of this series, I'll suggest where you go from there, while you're munching away on whatever treat you brought along with you.

Character Witness

I make no secret of this.  I have a book which was just published this year that I
hope will change the world.

Two-and-a-half years in the making, it's not just more pulp fiction to add to the
pile. I wrote this with serious intentions of making a difference __ a
huge difference __ in the way America goes about its elections.

The great thing about writing a novel is being able to speak through the characters.
Martin Truth is my main character for An Unlikely Truth. Martin is a third-party
congressional candidate making his fourth attempt at ousting a duplicitous,
blowhard, right-wing incumbent in Ohio's conservative 3rd District. Like many
__ how about most? __ politicians these days, the incumbent says one thing, then
does the exact opposite. His loyalty is to big campaign donors, corporate
sponsors, and deep-pocketed oligarchs, at the expense of his
well-meaning but gullible constituents. In baffling but predictable
lockstep, people keep voting this guy back in, even though it's
ultimately against their own interests __ sound familiar?

Martin wants to put some integrity back into politics, at least in his
district, and fights an incredibly difficult battle against near
impossible odds and the ruthless tactics and brutal smear campaign of
his opponent, driven by a naive but firm belief in the fundamental right
of voters to be properly represented.

Here is a key passage from the book . . .
"What did Martin Truth stand for?
As the Green Party candidate he obviously believed in protecting the
environment. Something had to be done to stop global warming, if it
wasn’t too late already. We had to end our addiction to fossil fuels,
especially oil. There should be huge private and public investments in
renewable alternative energy sources: wind, ocean, solar. We had to
reverse deforestation. End desertification. Halt the privatization of
water and other basic necessities. Encourage local food production,
promote organic agriculture, and reduce the use of pesticides and GMO
seeds. In general, the world needed to back off corporatizing everything
and return to local production and control. With bold and determined
political leaders on the front lines, it needed to confront and defeat
the multinational corporate juggernaut that was polluting and destroying
the Earth.
As might be expected, Martin’s progressivism extended broadly from his
commitment to environmental causes to a number of co-related social
issues. He categorically took exception to the every-man-for-himself
madness of the right wing and believed that all of us through
representative government should take a greater role in helping others,
especially those who were less able to fend for themselves. This
included the old, the infirm, victims of racism and other forms of
discrimination. And those who had lost their jobs and fallen on hard
times. The poor. The undereducated. Children. Most definitely children!
Without a doubt, Martin would be labeled as a bleeding-heart liberal by
the crass law-of-the-jungle conservatives, who he thought lacked both
compassion and common decency, people who called themselves Christians
but somehow missed the most obvious and critical aspects of Christ’s
teachings: Feed the hungry, clothe the poor, heal the sick, tend to the
needs of the less fortunate.
'For I was hungry, and you gave Me something to eat; I was thirsty, and you gave Me something
to drink; I was a stranger, and you invited Me in; naked, and you
clothed Me; I was sick, and you visited Me; I was in prison, and you
came to Me … Truly I say to you, to the extent that you did it to one of
these brothers of Mine, even the least of them, you did it to Me.'  –  Matthew 25:35/36/40
Hardly what could be called a Bible-thumper, questionably even a Christian at
all by any conventional standards, Martin had used that passage in his
campaign literature last election season. Very few voters seemed to
appreciate its relevance to the progressive ideals he espoused. If they
did, they still managed to forget about him when it came time to vote.
Martin was also deeply committed to human rights, under relentless assault
long before humankind even recognized what they were. It was ironic that
now in many countries which had long had an onerous record of human
rights abuses, there were significant improvements, while in America
itself, allegedly champion of humane and just treatment, fairness, and
respect for all, human rights was suffering dismal setbacks every day.
He was especially concerned about the intrusive levels of officially
unacknowledged surveillance, and the constant push for locking up more
and more citizens. There seemed to be a new mentality taking over which
destroyed any sense of proportion and reason with respect to
incarceration. It certainly was destroying justice and equality before
the law. The operating principle was: If we build it, they will come. Or more to the point: We’ve built a helluva lot of these prisons, now we’ve got to fill them! They were filling the prisons all right. Mostly with people of color.
Admittedly, there was a lot on his wish list, a substantial catalog of action items
which embraced the things Martin thought had to be done immediately to
reverse the downward, self-sabotaging course of the country. It was a
daunting set of tasks requiring the energy of the whole nation working
together, unified and determined in their dedication to rebuild a great
America.
Daunting or not, these were the things which drove him to seek a seat in Congress.
These were the things he thought crucial for a better world."
People love to label others. Somehow this puts them at ease. Once they've put
someone in a box, they feel they can deal with them. Or just dismiss
them and walk away. I full agree with Martin Truth. So what does this
make me? A liberal? A socialist?

I think it just makes me a decent human being.

If I ever have to stand trial, I hope to call to the stand a character
witness who merely says that. "Like Martin Truth, John   is a decent
human being. He just wants a better world."

good read with a solid message.

I certainly hope your reading it will be as inspiring as it was for me to write it.

An Unlikely Truth

Democracy at both the local and national levels recently has been under
savage assault. MartinTruth’s fight was but one of many such struggles to
restore the meaning of representative government to a system that had been
corrupted by big money and corporate power.

Martin Truth is a bright, young, idealistic, Green Party candidate, who in his
bid for the congressional seat of a very conservative district in Ohio,
teams with a beautiful, brilliant, fiery African-American intern to
combat the slick deceptions and ruthless tactics of a sweet-talking
right wing incumbent.

This is an inspiring story of a small, determined group of  committed
activists who either never knew or forgot the meaning of the word 'impossible'.
Using a unique and powerful strategy for throwing liars and crooks out
of public office and restoring representative democracy to our
country, politics would never again be the same.

Most importantly, An Unlikely Truthembraces the hope that not all is lost
__ that there is a “narrative” which can begin to put America back on track,
render government again of the people, by the people, and for the people.
